Bariatrics specialist of NC/Sleep Study question
Hey All,
I just had a few questions. I have my labs and psych on Thursday!!! Anyways, I am required to go through a sleep study :( and I just wanted to know if any of you had to do a sleep study. How long did it take for the sleep center to contact you? And what was the experience like.
Thanks in advance,
Chantelle
My cardiologist required a sleep study before he would clear me for surgery. I had no signs of sleep apnea, except for snoring, and I thought I wore out easy because of my heart condition and my obesity. I would do anything to have my surgery, so I had the study. The experience I had was pleasant-but I did get a little claustrophobic when the attendant put the headgear and mask on me. I started to panic, but then remembered I could not have my RNY unless I had the study, then I convinced myself to calm down.
I do have sleep apnea and feel so much better using a c-pap. I am 9 months out from surgery-I just had another study and I still have apnea, but it has improved and they have adjusted my machine. The c-pap supply company checks it every 30lbs I lose. I have lost 106 lbs. and have 35 more to go. Hopefully soon I will no longer need to sleep with "pappy" my c-pap!
I went to a Sleep center in Sanford, NC and there was no wait, we scheduled the following week, but I know some sleep centers get backed up.
I hope all goes well and smoothly for you, and get ready for the ride of your life!

Hi Chantelle,
Actually, it is very common for a sleep study to be ordered because an overwhelming percentage of obese people suffer from sleep apnea. There are a couple of reasons that they do this. One is because sleep apnea is considered a significant co-morbidity of obesity and when left untreated can lead to heart attack, stroke, and other serious conditions. When identified, it adds to your arsenal when being submitted for insurance consideration. But probably more important, when you have surgery and you are put under anesthesia, it really depresses your respiration. If you suffer from sleep apnea, you may have difficulty breathing well after anesthesia and they need to know about this so that they can treat you accordingly.
Normally, the sleep study can be scheduled relatively quickly and is a painless process. If they give you a mask that makes you feel claustrophobic, ask them to get you a different kind. They usually have have a number of different options available.

I had it with several different doctors I had seen prior to going with Dr. Mitchell.
If you want a good experience DO NOT go to SomnaQuest in Garner.
I did have Sleep Apnea (and didn't know till I did the sleep study). However, I've lost 230lbs and I STILL have apnea. No one bothered to tell me that while apnea can be caused by obesity, there are other forms of it. Apparently I have obstructive apnea and my weight made it worse, but was not the single cause.
So unlike Annie and others, I didn't get to wave goodbye to my machine after all my weight loss. *sigh*
I've heard Rex's sleep study facility is really nice.
